The black screen of death on your LG Stylo 5 can result from a software or hardware issue. There can be 3 scenarios –
- Your phone is on but the screen is black
- The screen goes black during a call or intermittently every now and then.
- Your Stylo 5 is not turning on & is completely dead.
First of all, you should make sure your phone is on or off –
- Bring your phone in a dark environment and check the backlight. If the light is emitting from the screen, the phone is on but the screen is black.
- You can also ring yourself from another phone. If the phone rings but the screen remains black the phone is not dead.
If your Stylo 5 is completely dead and not turning on, then please head over to the below troubleshooting guide –
Now, if your Stylo 5 is on but the screen is black, then let’s see how to fix it –
How to fix LG Stylo 5 Black Screen of Death
1. Check if your phone is in Sleep Mode
If your Stylo 5 power button is stuck, it won’t be able to wake the screen from sleep.
In such a case, we can try to turn on the screen with a double-tap. This feature is known as “knock-on”.
To test the power button, you should try to charge your phone.
If the charging icon appears on the screen, but you fail to boot the phone using the power key, this indicates the button needs a replacement.
To fix the Stylo 5 power button, your need to replace the Power Button Flex Cable. You can get it from eBay for around $9
Is your Stylo 5 screen still black? Don’t worry, let’s try to force restart the phone –
2. Try to Force Restart your LG Stylo 5
LG Stylo 5 has a non-removable battery. We cannot force shut down the phone by removing the battery.
So, we need to use the volume down + power button to force restart the phone.
Press & hold the volume down & power keys for 10 seconds or until the phone restarts.
If your screen is still black, then move on to the next troubleshooting step –
3. Try to put your phone into Download Mode / LG Stylo 5 Stuck on Firmware Update, Metro T Mobile, Logo Screen
In the next troubleshooting step, we are going to put our Stylo 5 into the Download Mode.
To reboot your Stylo 5 into Download Mode –
- Grab a USB Type-C data cable
- Turn on your PC
- Connect one end of the data cable to the computer
- Press & hold the volume up button on your Stylo 5
- Connect the other end of the USB-C cable to the phone
- Your phone must be now on the Firmware Update screen also known as the Download Mode
If you’ve got access to the Download Mode, then you can restore your phone by flashing the LG Stylo 5 stock firmware.
If your Stylo 5 is stuck on the firmware update screen, you can also try to force restart the phone. Press & hold the volume down and power keys for 10 seconds or until the phone restarts.
Even when your Stylo 5 is stuck on the Logo screen, Metro Screen, or T Mobile screen, you need to use the Download Mode to flash a stock ROM via the LGUP flash tool.
If you failed to access the Download Mode & the screen is still black, then let’s try the next troubleshooting step –
4. Try to enter the Recovery Mode to factory reset your Stylo 5
We failed to access the Download Mode. Let’s try to boot our Stylo 5 into Recovery Mode.
To enter the recovery mode, we need to press the volume down and power button to turn on the phone.
During the boot-up, when the phone vibrates, release the power key and hold it again. Keep holding both the buttons until you reach the “Factory data reset” screen.
If you’ve got access to the Recovery mode, then it’s better to factory reset the phone. In the recovery mode, we need to use the volume rocker and power button. The touch doesn’t work.
Now, at this stage, if your Stylo 5 screen is still black, then we need to go for a hardware repair. Let’s move ahead to fix the Stylo 5 black screen issue –
5. LG Stylo 5 LCD Screen Replacement
By this time, we have tried all the methods of software troubleshooting to no avail.
If your Stylo 5 has gone through physical or liquid damage, the LCD must be damaged.
To fix the Stylo 5 screen you need to shell out around $36 to get a replacement LCD from amazon with the complete toolkit.
7. LG Stylo 5 Screen goes black during call / Proximity Sensor Test
Now, in some cases, the screen turns black only during a call. This issue is related to the Proximity sensor.
The Proximity sensor is supposed to turn off the screen when you bring it towards your ear during a call. The screen should turn on automatically when you unblock the sensor or move the phone away from your face.
If the screen remains black, you should do a proximity sensor test.
On the LG Stylo 5, we can do this test via the Hidden menu –
The Hidden Menu code for the Boost Stylo 5 is 5689#*720#
Open the phone dialer and enter the above code.
For other Stylo 5 versions such as Metro, T-Mobile, AT&T, etc the hidden menu code is *#546368#*720#
There are 4 options on the Hidden Menu page, we need to select the first option i.e. Device Test
Now, Go to “SAAT” > “Service Menu – Manual Test”
Select the 2nd test on the list i.e. “Key Press Test”.
Follow the on-screen instructions to do the proximity sensor test. Block & unblock the sensor as per the instructions to PASS the test.
The proximity sensor is located beside the front camera on the LG Stylo 5.
